All Creatures Great and Small

The first lady chose "All Creatures Great and Small" as this year's White House holiday theme. Replicas of 25 First Family pets are displayed throughout the White House to celebrate the joy and comfort animals and pets have brought the presidents and their families over the years. "There are very many interesting stories about all the animals that have lived here, and entertained and comforted or worked for different presidents while they were here," said Laura Bush.

In keeping with tradition, the official White House Christmas tree adorns the Blue Room and has an extra special theme, "American Birds." A major center piece of all the decorating, the 18 foot towering noble fir is a showcase for America's passion for birds, particularly songbirds. "It's a really beautiful tree covered with birds from all over the United States," said the First Lady. Several doves prominently grace the tree, symbolizing the tradition of peace.

Governors from all 50 states and the territories submitted 5 names of artisans in each state to design one-of-a-kind hand made ornaments of indigenous species found in their home state. All extraordinary ornaments will become a part of the permanent collection of America's ornaments, in America's House. Decorating the White House Christmas tree with "American Birds" is one brightly festive idea that has allowed songbirds to bask in the national spot light as fun works of art.
