Chickadee Croutons, Lots of Hunting Targets Published November 13, 2003.
The Flint Journal First Edition. Journal outdoors writer David Graham couldn't have said it better ["Dove hunting bill deserves to be signed by governor," The Fenton Press, Nov. 9, Page 11]. He makes me proud to be an outdoorsman. He's right. We should blast the heck out of all those mean-spirited mourning doves. Don't you just hate their obnoxious early morning cooing? They are such an aggressive bird. Perhaps, the state House didn't go far enough. We need more species on the game bird list. It's rumored that chickadees make great croutons on Caesar salads. Blue jays are backyard bullies and they deserve to be shot. If you want an abundant sporting target, let's add sparrows. Ever try to hit a low-flying sparrow? Talk about a tough shot. With sparrows you could fill a whole trophy case. Wouldn't that display impress your hunting buddies? We can't forget starlings; they
are so Hitchcock-ish when they flock. Maybe we could dynamite
them like the carrier pigeon. While we are at it, let's have a special season on the Kirtland's warbler. I understand there are hundreds of sportsmen from Ohio, Indiana and Illinois who will pay big bucks to hunt the little rascals now that they are making a comeback We could use those fees to balance the state budget. If we don't have enough targets to shoot at already, I know a stretch of highway that has some deer crossing signs with no bullet holes in them yet. Dale C. Swihart Jr., Fenton |
