Senator Clark-Coleman: Nugent, You Are No Rosa Parks! LANSING- State Senator Irma Clark-Coleman (D-Detroit) expressed moral outrage today at comments made yesterday by aging rock star Ted Nugent who compared himself to civil rights icon Rosa Park. Mr. Nugent stated he was "Rosa Parks with a 12-gauge" while speaking at the Lansing Capitol in support of a bill which would legalize mourning-dove hunting in Michigan. "I'm deeply offended that Mr. Nugent would compare himself to an American hero who helped to lift an entire race of people out of the iron grip of segregation," said Sen. Clark-Coleman. "Rosa Parks is a legend to millions of Americans who are committed to overcoming bigotry and building a color blind society. Mr. Nugent is simply a legend in his own mind."
"What's the urgency on a bill that serves no more purpose than to teach children that it's ok to shoot and kill all of God's creatures," said Clark-Coleman. "It's embarrassing that at a time when this state is facing nearly a billion dollar deficit this Legislature is wasting its time and energy debating mourning-dove hunting." Proponents of removing the 100 year old ban on mourning dove hunting have argued that the measure would be useful in teaching women and children how to shoot. See it here. |
