Petition May Halt Hunts for Doves

Petition may halt hunts for doves

Mourning doves may have a new lease on life in Michigan. The Committee to Restore the Dove Shooting Ban collected more than 275,000 signatures for its referendum that would allow voters to decide whether hunters should be allowed to shoot the birds. No challenges were made to the signatures by opponents of the effort, which will likely be decided on the November 2006 election ballot. Once the signatures are certified on June 11, it would suspend mourning dove hunts this fall and in 2006. Hopefully, this will put those birds in better spirits.
