Going dovish: Lawmaker fueled petition drive

The hunting of mourning doves hardly qualifies as important enough to earn a spot on a future statewide ballot. Nevertheless, hunt opponents plan to submit on Monday enough petitions to force a referendum on that very issue.

It's hard to blame hunt opponents, though, for this misuse of time and effort. For that, thank Michigan's legislators and Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

It was legislators, spearheaded by former state Rep. Susan Tabor, R-Delta Township, who pushed for dove hunting. It was Granholm who finally signed a limited hunt law - after pledging as a candidate she wouldn't back hunting.

And it was legislators, mostly Republicans, who were so keen on hunting that they tried to appropriate money so as to block a referendum on the issue.

Since elected leaders have acted in an untrusting fashion, it only made sense for opponents to cut them out of the process. And that means a referendum - and that means a statewide vote.

Bother.
